houston chronicle “dartboard”
Many thanks to Craig Hlavaty at the Houston Chronicle for covering our “Get What You Hit” Dartboard Challenge.
“Sometimes, deciding exactly what you want is the hardest part of getting a tattoo, besides the pain that comes after the decision.
It’s not just the permanence of the decision, but the visual reminder of what could be a whimsical moment of charity.
That’s why today I’m standing next to a taxidermied wolverine named Clarence, holding a yellow dart in my hand and preparing to hurl it at a dartboard covered in traditional tattoo designs.
You can figure out what comes next: Wherever the dart lands is what will be inked into my skin — whether it’s a grimacing frog or a butterfly with eyes on its wings.”

gabriel massey - voyage houston
Owner/Tattooer Gabriel Massey was featured in local online journal Voyage Houston
Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabriel Massey.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have been tattooing full time right at 12 years now. I was introduced to the profession by my mentor, Dan Martin of the renowned Scorpion Studios. He was dabbling in writing horror movies and I have a degree in Film Production. We worked out a quid pro quo where I would give him pointers on screenwriting and he would show me the ropes in tattooing. At that point, I had no real grasp of the degree of commitment that would be required to excel in this line of work. I really just thought tattooing would be a creative day job while I tried to work on my own film career.
neil roberts - west tx tattoo convention
Tattooer Neil Roberts discusses his tattoo career.
The West Texas Tattoo Convention held their 11th annual event from Friday, February 28th to Sunday, March 1st. The convention had over 3,000 people attend it, most of them pursuing new ink from some of the 150+ vendors. Scores of others were getting their first tattoos.
The old idea of, “tattoos are only for sailors and convicts” has given way, over the last 20 years, to a more artistic appreciation of tattooing. Originally tattoos showed that you belonged to something or displayed a reference to the fact that you had accomplished something, most times it was something difficult or that required courage. While that is still the case with some tattooing, people have started appreciating it for its beauty and meaning.
